With the end of ‘Game Of Thrones’ on the horizon, HBO will look to fill the void with a suitable fantasy series – It seems they have found their answer in ‘Who Fears Death’.
‘Game Of Thrones’ creator George RR Martin will work alongside HBO and serve as an Executive Producer for the upcoming science-fiction fantasy series, which is based on the critically-acclaimed novel of the same name by Nnedi Okorafor.
‘Who Fears Death’ has won a variety of highly regarded awards. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic future version of Sudan, where the light-skinned Nuru oppress the dark-skinned Okeke. The protagonist, Onyesonwu (Igbo for “who fears death”), is an Ewu, i.e. the child of an Okeke woman raped by a Nuru man. On reaching maturity, she goes on a quest to defeat her sorcerous father Daib using her magical powers. Interested?
The series will be written and adapted for television by Selwyn Seyfu Hinds. This series comes under the agreement between George RR Martin and HBO, which also includes his involvement in the five planned Game Of Thrones spin-offs.
Writer of the novel, Nnedi Okorafor tweeted out recently, stating that the series in in ‘early development’ with the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ creator as executive producer. That’s a pretty good crew! See the tweet below:
Aside from Who Fears Death, another fantasy series that many are looking forward to possibly hitting screens is the Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss. These novels consist of The Name Of The Wind, The Wise Man’s Fear, The Slow Regard Of Silent Things (Novella) and The Doors of Stone (upcoming) as well as a few companion short tales. We know that Lionsgate have picked up the rights to this series and are ready to begin development with Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda as creative director and producer. Read more here:
