Netflix Cancel ‘Gypsy’ After One Season – Petition Launched

The psychological thriller ‘Gypsy’ has been cancelled on Netflix following its one season, according to reports.

It’s fair to say that the network has made some odd decisions this year regarding its original shows. First they cancel: The Get Down, Sense8 & Girlboss. Next, they renew: Marvel’s Iron Fist, Stranger Things , GLOW & 13 Reasons Why. The latest to enter the graveyard of unfinished shows is Gypsy. What did you make of this decision?

The main reason for Netflix’s recent cancellations is that recent reports (Fader, LA Times) suggest that the company could be sitting on more than $20 Billion of debt. However, it’s not all bad with the last week bringing us the news that they have renewed their biggest show ‘Stranger Things’ for a third season, prior to season 2 even airing!

According to Deadline, Netflix had been in positive talks with the producers about a second season and the cancellation decision comes after a writers room had been up and running for four weeks, working on storylines and scripts for Season 2.

The show is headlined by Academy Award-nominee Naomi Watts. In Gypsy, therapist Jean Holloway (Watts) develops dangerous and intimate relationships with the people in her patients’ lives.

This will come as a huge disappointment to fans, especially after creator Lisa Rubin was speaking about a second season believing it would happen. Read what she said about it to EW below:

“In terms of a season 2, in general, it will become more of a thriller. The last few episodes of season 1 are more intense because our commitment was to it being a slow burn. Those first five episodes are about immersing yourself in Jean’s world… I’m surprised at how many people are with Jean despite what she’s doing, which is part of what I wanted… it sets us up for a season 2. We’re fully in, a lot is happening. Obviously, there’s a lot more escalation. In those ways, it will potentially answer critics.”

An awful lot of Netflix’s decision on the future of their shows are not on the ratings that the shows get, but it is on the viewing numbers, because ultimately, the more eyes they get watching, the more money they make no matter how good or bad the show is. In this case, Gypsy got a fair reception from critics, gaining a collective 7.2/10 on IMDb. However, Gypsy just did not get enough viewers to merit a renewal.

A Petition has now been launched to bring it back! CLICK HERE TO SIGN!

With Sense8 getting a 2-hour finale after a renewal, you never know what might happen, it already has over 3000 signatures.
